5 Tips for Children's Birthday Parties During Quarantine

Quarantine has been hard on all of us, but we all know that these times are hardest on the children in our lives

There are moments filled with change and uncertainty in their world and no matter how we try to protect them they still feel the effects of these unprecedented times.  In an instant they went from going to school, interacting with their peers and playing with their friends, to being confined to activities that can only be done at home.

One thing I am sure we can all agree on is that celebrations at this time are more important than ever! While celebrations like birthday’s and first milestones may not be the way we are used to, we have come up with 5 easy to incorporate ideas to making celebrations special during this time:

1.     IT IS ALL ABOUT THE THEME

A different way of celebrating does not mean that you shouldn’t have a theme.  There are options available for ordering themed décor on amazon as well as curbside pick-up from some of the larger party supply stores in the area. Specialized boxes can also be put together for you by pre-order if you get in touch with us directly.  Whether you are putting together a balloon garland with an at home kit or ordering a couple of balloon bouquets from a local supplier; putting those special touches in to the celebration can help to make the birthday child feel special and still keep some of the whimsical magic of their special day intact.

2.     FOOD, FOOD, FOOD

What is more special than preparing (or supporting your local restaurants and ordering) their favourite meals throughout the day. Have them wake up to their favourite birthday breakfast, follow it up with an activity and then a fun lunch where they can get involved in making their meal.  End the day with a dinner that the whole family can enjoy together. I know that this can be a lot of work and that their favourite meals may not be completely nutritious but it’s a fun way to make the day special and after all their birthday only comes around once a year.

3.     EVERYBODY WANTS A PARADE

At a time when we need to physically distance you can put together a car parade for the special birthday boy/girl. Ask friends and family to join you outside your home and have a parade of cars drive by the house with some special birthday messages, fun songs playing and they could even have balloons attached to their cars.  Once people have arrived, you can come out onto the driveway and participate in a physically distanced gathering.  (this can work for adults too!)

4.     A LIVE RENDITION OF HAPPY BIRTHDAY FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

As an alternative to the parade, bring everyone together to sing happy birthday to your child via video conferencing (Zoom or Facetime are free!).  It is an easy and fun way to bring everyone together.

5.     A SWEET TREAT

Cake or some cookies as a sweet treat is always a must. After all what is a more quintessential way to celebrate any birthday than singing and blowing out candles?  Add this to your video conferencing call for the perfect way to end the day of birthday celebrations.

Whether you incorporate one or all of these ideas into any birthday celebration the idea is to find ways to keep the day special regardless of the current world circumstances.  During uncertain times, we can continue to make amazing memories for those that are important to us.
